Drama Club's Second Success of Season

Producing a play not backward in words or ideas in its demand for action in a class struggle against business exploiters, the Dramatic Club presented its second major success of the season, Clifford Odets' Waiting for Lefty, Tuesday and Wednesday nights at the K T R H Radio Playhouse. The production was directed by Frederick Leon Webster. B e f o r e a well-filled house, the a m a teurs were given a chance to display their individual ability in the m o r e o r less isolated roles of the episodic d rama. Burke Haymes , as H a r r y Fa t t , secretary of the t ax i -d r ive r s union, wi th his big cigar, his feet-on-desk, and his roar ing speeches, who opposes a s tr ike as he presides over the union meeting, was outs tanding. In the episodes, explanat ions , connected by the union meet ing, of the reasons each charac te r had f o r wan t ing a strike, a dozen o the r p layers gave pe r fo rmances rang ing f r o m m o r e than sa t i s fac tory to excellent. Zelda Keeper and J o h n Barker , as husband and w i f e who can' t feed the chi ldren on the money lie makes dr iv ing a taxi , w e r e perhaps the best pair. Dowlen She! ton and Billie Beaulieu played the episode with a punch, Shclton, a f t e r he loses his job f o r r e f u s i n g io act as a spy on a fel low chemist work ing on poison gas iii lle.iulieu's laboratory, concluding the scene with a right to the j a w which looked good and sounded better . Rita Gay and George Mothera l , the youngs ters w h o can't get mar r ied on a tax i -dr ivers wages, w e r e jus t a little over taxed with heavy lines, but t he re is certainly no complaint to make. Bi | ly Goyen, Ri ta ' s b ro ther in the scene, supported the pair well. T h e play reached its reddes t point in the wel l -done scene in which J o a n W i l son, s tenographer , gives I r l Mowery , ou t -o f -work ac tor w h o is turned down again by Addis Miller, a dol lar to buy nine loaves of bread and a copy of Marx ' s Communist Manifesto. A r t h u r Capiat), the young doctor yvho loses his job because of the adverse influence of weal thy hospital board members , is more convincing than Arthur I ' latt , the old doctor w h o tells h im to fight.
